About 3,500 high school students interested in construction, plumbing, and engineering travelled from all over Kentucky last month to the Shelby County Fairgrounds for the Annual Kentucky Construction Career Choice Council (K4C) Career Days.
Throughout the two-day event, students had the opportunity to meet and interact with hundreds of industry professionals who shared insights into their daily work and the skills required for success. Among them was Scott Corbin, Louisville Water Plumber Leader, who demonstrated the complexities of maintaining and repairing fire hydrants. With over 25,000 hydrants under Louisville Water’s care, Corbin enjoys showing students how the equipment operates and answering their questions.
“The young people are all eager to enter the workforce and are excited to see what’s out there as far as job opportunities,” Corbin said. “I know that Louisville Water is the best in the business when it comes to the quality of our product. Plus, it’s a great place to work.”
Louisville Water Operations Supervisor Devinn Tytus said she was happy to see there were many female students who might be interested in working at Louisville Water. As a member of the Lady Legends “tapping team,” Tytus competes in regional and national competitions in which four-member crews race to tap into cement-lined, ductile iron pipes and install copper service lines. Louisville Water’s entire team participated in K4C Career Days this year.
“It was nice to put ourselves out there and let the students see that women are in the industry, letting them know they can do anything that they put their mind to,” Tytus said. “There will be challenges in everything that you do. You don’t know what you can do until you try!”
Louisville Water has participated in K4C Career Days for many years. In addition to demonstrating equipment and offering career advice, employees ensure that attendees stay hydrated by providing plenty of free Louisville Pure Tap.
Overall, this year’s event “was a great experience,” Tytus said.
