Hardin County Water District No. 1 breaks ground for a pipeline to connect to Louisville Water Company
In the next few weeks, crews will begin to install a large main that will give Hardin County Water District No. 1 (HCWD1) an additional supply of drinking water from Louisville Water Company. Leaders with HCWD1, Hardin County Judge Executive Harry Berry and Louisville Water broke ground on the project earlier today.
The work includes the construction of a pumping station and installing 4.6 miles of 16 and 24-inch diameter water main to connect to Louisville Water's infrastructure at Highway 31W and Katherine Station Road. Work will begin in mid-June and should be complete in 2017. When complete, HCWD1 will be able to purchase up to 3.5 million gallons of water per day from Louisville Water.
HCWD1 needs the additional water to supplement its supply during high-demand months or an extended drought. A $4.5 million grant from the Base Realignment and Closure Act will fund the work.
"This groundbreaking represents the culmination of seven years of work with HCWD1 and Louisville Water," said Jim Bruce, HCWD1 General Manager. "This additional supply of water will allow us to continue to provide safe, great tasting drinking water to our customers for decades to come."
Louisville Water already works with HCWD1 in a contract partnership, operating the Fort Knox Water Treatment Facility. "Louisville Water is fortunate to not only have an abundant water supply with the Ohio River but the ability to supply additional water to our regional partners.," said Spencer Bruce, Interim President and CEO of Louisville Water. "Louisville Water can help provide regional water solutions and our work with HCWD1 is a great example of this."
HDR Engineering is coordinating design for the project and Cleary Construction of Tompkinsville is the construction contractor. Connecting to Louisville Water will also give HCWD1 the ability to shut down its Pirtle Spring water treatment facility if needed and purchase its water from the Louisville Water connection.
