Eastern Pkwy & Barret Ave closing for weekend

Eastern Pkwy & Barret Ave closing for weekend
November 28, 2016

The intersection of Eastern Parkway and Barrett Avenue will be closed to traffic this weekend as Louisville Water replaces one of the oldest water mains in its system. We are in the midst of replacing a 1930 water main that runs along Eastern Parkway.  It’s a complex project as crews push a 42-inch diameter pipe inside the larger 48-inch pipe.  Because the original water main turns, there are sections where crews must cut out the original pipe rather than push through a new pipe. That’s the case at Eastern Parkway and Barret Avenue.  Because the original water main turns and crosses this intersection, we need to close all four lanes of Eastern Parkway and Barrett Avenue to safely install the new water main. To minimize the traffic impact, work will be limited to one weekend.

Eastern Parkway and Barrett will be closed starting Friday December 2 at 8:00 pm to 5:00 am Monday December 4.  Find detour information here

Louisville Water is on a tight schedule to install the new water main. Crews are doing the work over the fall and winter months because this is the only time we can safely take the large water main out of service without the potential of negatively impacting water quality, pressure, fire protection and reliability.

MORE ABOUT THE EASTERN PARKWAY PROJECT

Louisville Water will repair 6.6 miles of the Eastern Parkway water main in a three-year, multi-phased project.  An engineering solution allows us to repair the main, preserve the character of the Eastern Parkway corridor and not disrupt water service for thousands of customers.

The project involves an engineering process called slip-lining that eliminates the need to close the entire thoroughfare during the repairs.  The project will create traffic detours but customers will not lose water service while the new main is put in place. This is the largest water main repair project in Louisville Water’s 156-year history.

Phase 1 will conclude mid-April 2017 and includes replacing 2.2 miles of water main running from Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek near Poplar Level Road to Grinstead Drive near Lexington Road and Cherokee Park.
