Your Drinking Water is Safe

After a State of the City address, Mayor Greg Fischer was asked about the water crisis in Flint. As a part of his response, he called Louisville Water a "blessing" for the community and noted our history of  being nationally recognized for quality. The local media has run positive stories highlighting our proven record of quality and safety, as well as our attention to research and infrastructure improvements that keep families safer. This includes our lead replacement program and our commitment to free lead testing.

Our water is free of lead when it leaves our treatment facilities, but tap water can pick up lead from the pipes it travels through. We treat our water to minimize the chances of this happening. We also provide free testing kits to any customer who is concerned about lead in their water. Customers collect samples, return it to us and we analyze them.

Lead was the water industry standard for pipes up until the 1950's, and lead continued to be used in privately installed pipes, faucets and fixtures for decades. That's why our combination of prevention (both in the lab and with our lead replacement program) and free testing are so important.

Customers who are concerned about lead are welcome to request a free lead testing kit from us.
